3 Learnings from the viral hair analysis trend

In case you missed it, ChatGPT’s latest image generator dropped recently and people have been using it to analyse their hair.

Prompt & selfie in. Personalised breakdown out.

Here’s what stood out to me:

  1. Personalisation and usefulness are a winning combination  The trend took off because it felt genuinely helpful. People weren’t just getting generic information, they were getting something tailored to them, connected to their needs and lightly addressing real pain points in a way that felt relevant rather than forced.
  2. The quality of AI outputs is shifting dramatically   A year ago, this would have felt like a party trick. Now people are genuinely considering the hair recommendations (including me). It’s another reminder of how quickly AI capabilities are evolving.
  3. Going deeper helps us apply our judgement on how we use the outputs Naturally, I went deeper and asked ChatGPT how it arrived at its suggestions. Reading the reasoning and comparing it to conversations I’ve had over the years with my hairdresser this was surprisingly impressive.

Nice work, ChatGPT. You’ve got my attention again.

PS. If anyone at L'Oréal needs a new face for the hair dye boxes… I’m available 🙂
